Europe Day gymkhana against disinformation celebrates the fourth edition

The educational gymkhana organized by Learn to Check on the occasion of Europe Day 2026 has brought together more than 500 primary and secondary school students in the four Catalan provincial capitals throughout Europe Week. The activity, promoted by the Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona in collaboration with Learn to Check and the Europe Direct centers of Barcelona, Lleida, Girona and Tarragona, aims to promote critical thinking and combat disinformation through gambling.

Students from different educational centers in Barcelona, Lleida, Girona and Tarragona have participated in several tests focused on the analysis and verification of information, an activity that has been developed Learn to Check during the last four years as part of the celebration acts to commemorate the Schuman Declaration of 1950, considered the first official step towards the creation of the European Union.

Among the activities, they have worked on concepts linked to disinformation through crosswords and dynamics on the actors who disseminate false content. They have also carried out data verification and source verification exercises, as well as activities to detect manipulated images and content generated with artificial intelligence. The gymkhana was completed with a geolocation test in which participants had to identify different European cities from images.

A week of activities in the Catalan capitals

This year, as Europe Day (May 9) has fallen on Saturday, the initiative has been developed in different days and spaces of the four Catalan capitals, becoming the week of Europe. On Thursday, May 7, the activities took place in the Gardens of the Maternity of Barcelona and in the Plaza de la Catedral in Lleida. The next day, Friday, May 8, the gymkhana took place in the Central Park, next to the Espai Jove in Girona. Finally, Tarragona hosted the last day on Monday, May 11 in the Plaza de la Font.

The celebration of Europe Day this year coincided with the commemorative events of the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the European Union, which has further reinforced the institutional and citizen dimension of the day.

With this initiative, the organizing entities wanted to highlight the active role of citizens – and especially young people – in the construction of a more critical, informed and resilient Europe in the face of current information challenges.
