On March 5, the Muntpunt Library in Brussels hosted the formation and the first working session of the group of experts in Media and Information Literacy (MIL), which will advise the international librarians’ project Media and Information Literacy Community Connections (MIL CC). This group consists of professionals from seven countries (Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, France, Slovenia, and Italy). Their contributions will support MIL CC, an initiative aimed at strengthening the role of libraries as key agents in the fight against misinformation.

The meeting was organized by Public Libraries 2030, an organization dedicated to fostering innovation and the development of public libraries in Europe. During the gathering, the experts delved deeper into understanding the project and the content of the training course that librarians from Ireland, Spain, and Portugal will receive. The initial feedback on the project was very positive, accompanied by suggestions for improvement. Likewise, throughout the training process, the group will be kept informed and updated to continue providing suggestions and ideas that enhance the project.

With this initiative, the MIL CC project takes a step forward in its mission to strengthen media and information literacy skills, consolidating the network of librarians as key agents in the fight against misinformation and the promotion of critical thinking.

THE MIL CC PROJECT

The MIL CC project is funded by the prestigious European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), coordinated by the Instituto Universitario de Lisboa, and also has Learn to Check and Dublin City University as partners. Additionally, in Spain, it receives support from the Ministry of Culture and the Spanish Society for Documentation and Scientific Information (SEDIC).

Due to the great interest shown by various Spanish libraries in participating, Learn to Check has decided to double the number of available spots for the project in Spain. As a result, more than 100 professionals from 50 Spanish libraries will take part in this initiative. Libraries from Andalusia, Murcia, La Rioja, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, Navarra, and Aragón will be involved in this project.

The training will begin on April 8 with an in-person session in Madrid. It will be part of the XXVI Information Management Conference of SEDIC, titled “DO NOT FORGET: Lessons Learned from Innovation and Serendipity in Information Management”, which will also offer three days of activities, presentations, and debates.

The MIL CC training will continue with online sessions throughout April and May. Starting in June, the Learn to Checkteam will support participants in developing Media and Information Literacy (MIL) activities specifically designed for the communities they serve.
