Scientists from WHAT-IF at the London Social Media Observatory and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam are working with Learn to Check and Maldita, two leading Spanish organizations in the fight against misinformation, on an experimental project involving more than 250 citizens.

The aim of this alliance is to bring scientific research closer to practical applications and analyze how different strategies can influence citizens’ attitudes toward misinformation. Participants will take part in an experiment to see how consuming fact-checking, media literacy content, and more news affects the perception of misinformation.

Learn to Check's Experience at the Service of Research

Since its creation in 2020, Learn to Check has become a benchmark in media literacy in Spain. The organization, which is part of the Advisory Council of the WHAT-IF project, has conducted hundreds of educational workshops across the country, in collaboration with entities such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, UNICEF Spain, and more than 70 national and international organizations.

Now, Learn to Check is putting all this experience at the service of research, contributing to this experimental study with educational materials—infographics, videos, and textual resources—designed to strengthen citizens’ ability to recognize and stop misinformation before it spreads.

A Bridge Between Science and Practice

This collaboration is a prominent example of how science and practice can advance together in understanding the phenomenon of misinformation. While Maldita.es, a member of the International Fact-Checking Network, provides real cases and verified content in areas such as climate change, immigration, and gender equality, Learn to Check focuses on media literacy and the development of learning tools that help people critically navigate the digital environment.

Research with Real Impact

Working with the WHAT-IF team will allow the analysis of when and how citizens improve their ability to navigate the digital information ecosystem, combining scientific evidence with practical experience.

This collaboration demonstrates the key role that organizations like Learn to Check play in creating evidence-based solutions to address the challenge of misinformation.
