At Learn to Check, we are looking for active librarians interested in participating in the international training project on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) called ‘Media and Information Literacy Community Connections’ (MIL CC). This is an ambitious program that provides training, guidance, and support to professionals eager to promote MIL in their libraries.

Following the great success of the information sessions, we are making available to library professionals interested in this pioneering initiative a form to register their candidacy. Those who were unable to attend the meetings can still apply and contact the Learn to Check team so that we can provide them with the information dossier or the recording of the meeting. They can also write to us and we will be happy to answer any questions in this regard. All through the following email: marina@learntocheck.org.

Registration will remain open until February 23rd and the obtaining of the position will be confirmed at the beginning of March.

What does the MIL CC project consist of?

The MIL CC program offers training on disinformation, digital verification, and MIL to 50 librarians from 25 public libraries in Spain, with the aim of equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to design and develop MIL activities for the users of their libraries. In addition, the participating libraries will have the opportunity to become part of a network of European libraries committed to media literacy.

The project, funded by the prestigious European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), is coordinated by the University Institute of Lisbon and partnered with Learn to Check and Dublin City University. In Spain, the project receives support from the Ministry of Culture and the Spanish Society of Documentation and Scientific Information (SEDIC).

The goal is to train 150 professionals from Spain, Portugal, and Ireland and help them create their own training programs tailored to the needs of their communities. At the end of the project, each library will be required to develop an activity and train 20 people. In total, there will be 500 people trained per country, 1,500 in total.

What do we offer to libraries?

The project consists of three parts: a training phase, which will begin in April 2025 and run until June; another phase of expert guidance from Learn to Check professionals for the development of MIL activities, which will take place from June to November of the same year. Starting in November, participants will have the opportunity to become part of an international network of libraries committed to combating disinformation and share experiences with professionals from Ireland, Portugal, and other countries.

Requirements for applications

The applications received will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • The participating librarians must be active.
  • Public libraries will be prioritized, although all types of libraries can participate in the process (private, school, university, research center…)
  • Priority will be given to libraries in which at least two workers can participate. Library networks can also apply and will be counted as a single application.
  • Priority will be given to the geographical diversity of the participating centres.
  • Knowledge of English will be valued.
  • It is not necessary to have previous knowledge of AMI.

What do we need from professionals?

Participants must commit to attending the project’s training sessions, which will total 10 hours. The sessions will be hybrid, with the majority being online and two held in person. Additionally, participants will need to dedicate approximately 15 hours to designing, reviewing, evaluating, and implementing an MIL activity tailored to their communities.
