50 Spanish libraries design MIL activities with Learn to Check
A total of 50 public libraries from various autonomous communities in Spain are currently designing Media and Information Literacy (MIL) activities as part of the European project Media and Information Literacy Community Connections (MIL CC).
These libraries, located in Catalonia, Andalusia, Murcia, La Rioja, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Extremadura, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, Navarre and Aragon, are receiving support and guidance from Learn to Check, an educational and outreach project aimed at encouraging reflection on disinformation and bringing digital verification and media literacy closer to society.
After completing the first training phase, which began on April 8, the participating libraries have now entered the second stage of the project: designing activities that apply the concepts explored during the training to their local communities. These innovative and creative initiatives, developed with the support of Learn to Check’s expert team, are expected to launch at the beginning of the next academic year.
Each library is developing a project tailored to its community’s specific needs, with activities aimed at a wide range of audiences. Among the planned initiatives are intergenerational workshops, reading clubs, and engaging formats such as role-playing games, card games, escape rooms and gamified activities. The goal is to promote critical thinking, enhance information analysis skills, and strengthen citizens’ ability to detect disinformation — all with the aim of integrating MIL as a regular part of library programming.
The MIL CC project is funded by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), coordinated by the University Institute of Lisbon, and includes the participation of Learn to Check and Dublin City University. In Spain, the initiative is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sport and the Spanish Society for Scientific Documentation and Information (SEDIC).
