The MIL CC International Project Training for Librarians starts

More than 70 librarians from across Spain gathered on April 8th in Madrid to take part in the inaugural session of the international project Media and Information Literacy Community Connections (MIL CC). The launch of the MIL training for library professionals took place within the framework of the XXVI Jornadas de Gestión de la Información de SEDIC «NO OLVIDAR: Lecciones aprendidas de innovación y serendipia en la gestión de la información»

The day began at 11:30 a.m. with a participatory activity in the form of an Escape Room focused on disinformation, designed to experientially introduce the current challenges in Media and Information Literacy (MIL). Two sessions of this Escape Room format took place in the morning, a gamified methodology that is a hallmark of Learn to Check’s training programs.

In the afternoon, the institutional presentation of the project took place, followed by the first training session, with contributions from representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Sport and SEDIC. The event featured Diego Gracia, Head of the International Cooperation Service at the General Subdirectorate for Library Coordination of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, and Felicidad Campal, Library Assistant at the Junta de Castilla y León at the Public State Library in Salamanca, an expert in MIL and a board member of SEDIC. The initial training session, held at the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid, focused on the fundamentals of media and information literacy, laying the foundation for the program.

The MIL CC project is funded by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF), coordinated by the University Institute of Lisbon, and involves the participation of Learn to Check and Dublin City University. In Spain, the initiative is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sport and the Spanish Society for Documentation and Scientific Information (SEDIC).

The project’s aim is to strengthen the role of libraries as key agents in the fight against disinformation through specialized MIL training. Libraries from Catalonia, Andalusia, Murcia, La Rioja, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Extremadura, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, Navarre, and Aragon are participating.

The training will now continue online during April and May. Starting in June, the Learn to Check team will assist professionals in designing and developing MIL activities tailored to the needs of their communities. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to join an international network of libraries committed to media literacy and share experiences with other professionals from Ireland, Portugal, and other European countries.
