Battling misinformation in the classroom: course for teachers

At Learn to Check, we design and deliver specialized training courses for secondary school teachers. In these courses, education professionals learn what misinformation is and how it affects society.  They are introduced to the processes and tools of digital verification and trained to use resources and projects in the classroom to help students build skills such as critical thinking, searching for reliable information, information analysis, and teamwork. The members of the Learn to Check team have given 3-hour workshops and accredited training courses (from 8 to 18 hours) for teaching centers in Madrid, Cantabria, Catalonia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, and Extremadura. We have also given an accredited course with the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation. In addition, the U.S. Embassy in Madrid and the Consulate General in Barcelona subsidize some of these courses for teachers.

Objetives

The main objective of the course is to train secondary school teachers on the concepts related to misinformation, its multiple forms, causes and consequences, as well as to introduce them to digital verification and provide them with materials to implement media education in digital verification in the classroom. The course will teach participants processes and tools to verify information, photographs, videos and social media content and accounts.

Program

  1. Disinformation: what is it and how does it affect us?
  2. Introduction to digital verification: keys and tools
  3. Journalistic and scientific initiatives against disinformation
  4. Resources and ideas to combat disinformation in the classroom

Methodology

The courses combine the presentation of concepts with the viewing of videos, discussion of the subject matter and practical exercises.

Variations

The courses can be on-site or on-line. We offer basic 3-hour workshops and more extensive training (ranging from 8 to 18 hours). The program, contents and methodology vary according to the format.
